Larry Bland & The Volunteer Choir have over the past 50 years, established an extraordinary history in the City of Richmond, garnering numerous awards for excellence and outstanding performances.
In addition to the group's unique and universally appealing presentation, coupling elegant costuming with precision choreography, the organization is widely accepted and popular across all socio-economic layers of the City of Richmond and across the Nation. The organizations' distinct brand of gospel music promotes goodwill and brotherhood. Among the group's many stellar accomplishments are their joining forces with the Richmond Symphony 1980 Pops Series, The Richmond Opera Company's presentation of the Scott Joplin Opera "Treemonisha", serving as supporting cast for the opening of the Richmond Center for Performing Arts with a full production of the musical "Purlie", assisting in special fundraising programs for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, association with Steve Bassett to promote several March of Dimes Superwalk Campaigns, performing for the Honorable Chuck Robb's Inauguration, and performing as a part of Virginia's 2007 Royal Welcome of Her Majesty The Queen of England, and also notably an appearance before the late Reverend James Cleveland during the 1981 Gospel Convention in California.
In addition to annual appearances as a part of the City of Richmond, Department of Parks and Recreation's summer music series at the Dogwood Dell Amphitheater, the group has also participated in major events at the Wolf Trap Amphitheater and Washington, D.C.’s Constitution Hall and Mellon Auditorium.
Under the leadership and direction of Larry Bland, the group has also toured extensively and is recognized as one of the premiere groups nationally that introduced and made popular the concept of "Gospel Show Choir". Mr. Bland has worked closely with numerous community related programs and is a highly respected Musician, Arts Administrator, and Producer of Special Events. He has received numerous awards for his direction of the June Jubilee Festival, Theatre performances and Artistic Contributions.
Often the music is complemented by choreographed presentations which are created exclusively for the choir by Larry Bland.
Larry Bland & The Volunteer Choir is committed to bringing forth gospel music as a ministry that positively reflects, influences, and preserves the Black Culture.
